Revisiting the Old Stomping Grounds
Today (and for the next few days), I'm in Wichita, Kansas, where I spent five years in the late 70s and early 80s. I got my Master of Music Degree at Wichita State University in 1979; after that I taught Junior High Band, played with the Wichita Symphony and worked as a freelance musician and part time classical music announcer. And of course, my friends and I spent a lot of time at Connie's Mexico Cafe.25 years later, this little hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop restaurant is still a MUST if you're anywhere near Wichita. You'll find it on the corner of 21st and Broadway, with parking on the north side of the building. The platters are gi-normous (as the picture of the carne burrito shows), and the chips and salsa are made right in the kitchen.
I was a little surprised at how rundown my old neighborhood has become, but I also wonder if it was just as rundown 25 years ago and I just don't remember. The city itself has really expanded, or possibly sprawled. It will be interesting to explore some more tomorrow.
