10 Business Lessons from 'Battlestar Galactica'

Robert Strohmeyer, at pcworld.com has a great take on the series. He posted these lessons on March 20:

The tale of Galactica is rife with lessons that can benefit any business leader.

1. Technology isn't always the answer.

2. Don't neglect training.

3. Some things can't be outsourced.

4. Update your antivirus.

5. Democracy doesn't always work.

6. Some problems can't be killed.

7. Seek strategic alliances with competitors.

8. Don't store all your backups in one place.

9. The mission can change at any time.

10. Beware of visionaries. Zealots make bad leaders.

Help Save an Important Community Resource in New York State

Governor David Paterson has proposed a 50% reduction in operating aid to public broadcasting stations in New York State. If adopted, this budget cut will seriously impair the ability of New York’s PBS and NPR stations to produce local broadcast programming and deliver education programs and services, both on and off air, to teachers and students across the state. Many communities will loose access to great music and informative, objective news coverage.

Please let your elected officials know how you feel about this proposed cut, and that public broadcasting is an important community resource. You can write a letter to your NY State Senator or Assembly Representative, or call the Governor’s Office at (518) 474-1041. Or you can contact Albany by clicking on the link to Save NY PBS. Protect your community and your local public broadcasting station.

Thank you.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Over 40 of our Junior and Senior High Youth at Third Presbyterian Church are hard at work on their upcoming presentation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In the familiar story from the book of Genesis, Joseph is the favorite son of Jacob and Rachel, who receives a coat of many colors as a show of his father’s love. The youth will be accompanied by a small orchestra made up primarily of Third Church members, including yours truly on French Horn. There will be two performances on Sunday, March 29 at 10:45 am and 7:00 pm. A free will offering will be received.
